1. Malaysia is blessed with a climate and soil that enables trees to take root and grow very fast. Our success in the plantation industry is due to this. The trees we grow, rubber, oil palm tree and cocoa are foreign to Malaysia yet they grow better here than in the countries of their origins.
2. However, the success of our plantation industry has totally affected out thinking. We know that by planting trees in perfect rows, with the trees separated from each other by a specific distance, we maximise the potential for growth and render the extraction of the latex or the fruits easier and more efficiently. We miss none of the trees when we tap rubber or bring down the fruits.
3. But forest trees do not grow in rows. They are scattered haphazardly. It is this which gives the forest their special appearance or character.

4. For various reasons we have to reaforest the forest we had raped. We also need to create new forests.
5. But because we are so addicted to planting trees in orderly rows, when we want to reaforest or to create a new forest, we plant the forest trees in the same way. Even when we plant teak and other trees on the road shoulders, they are planted in perfect rows. Our secondary man-made forests look nothing like forests at all. They look like tree estates.
6. But there are times when planting on the road sides, we want to create an avenue of trees. Then we should plant just one row of trees or palm trees perfectly aligned and separated. The tree should be the same all the way through. But when we want to recreate forests let the trees be scattered haphazardly like in the forest.

You should realize that in Malaysia, everything is political. And when it comes to politician mind of thinking, they praise global by neglecting local.
Please tell Taib to reforest the forest which he has constantly raped. You should sacked him when you had the chance too.
Assalamualaikum Yg Berbahagia Tun,
I visited Malacca last month, having last toured the city 6 years ago. I am amazed by the landscapes that have matured along the roadsides from the NS highway leading into Malacca City centre.
Having lived and brought up in the Garden City of Singapore where the greenery is pervasive as a result of a consistent and sustained effort by our government, Malacca seems to be learning fast and it is where we were at 10-15 years ago.
Singapore's greenery intensification program has evolved a few steps ahead beyond artificial rows of neatly-planted roadside trees. We have already successfully emulated forest planting along some of our roadsides in the sub-urban areas. We are now talking about developing our roadside greenery as green corridors of biodiversity where birds and other wildlife can commute through the corridors that link our housing estates into one giant green matrix. We are also moving fast into using the greenery to develop hearts and minds, as a next step towards a strong people ownership of our Garden City.
Our parks and natural heritage areas are coming under some sort of pressure for land use. But significantly Singaporeans are defending them as a crucial part of the social and economic capital that makes our small congested island liveable.
My personal view is that trees and parks and landscapes are always in a constant battle for the limited dollars, especially when it comes to the crunch of providing the population with more urgent economic needs. They are sometimes seen as non-vital and hence there is a need to have strong and coherent public education programs to nurture understanding in the importance of greenery, especially among our young ones - our future leaders. Without a strong leadership and political support, I do not think any city can successfully green up in the long term.
But I am reminded of what history had to offer - when America wanted to come out of its Great Depression in the 1930's, Roosevelt embarked on a massive public infrastructure program, chief among which was the creation of many public parks, greenery and green open spaces that are enjoyed by millions of people even until this very day.
This is interesting. In my humble opinion, the government should stop cutting down trees in the forest. Or government should ensure no illegal cutting down forest. That should be FIRST.
SECONDLY, those that had been illegally fell down, need to be reforested. By all means, whether you plant it in a row or zig zag it doesn't MATTER. As long as the tree is growing UP and NOT DOWN SUBSEQUENTLY BY BULLDOZER. Then let nature take its own initiative.
In my humble opinion, your opinion does not see the tree from the forest. However it is a very interesting discussion.
Dear Tun,
How can man replicate Nature. We can try all we want but we can never do it.
Who is man to play GOD?

...BUT WE HAVE NO COMPLAINTS TO TREES GROWN IN ROWS TO 'PERFECT' DISTANCES ALONG THE ROADS BUT UNFORTUNATELY OVERTIME THEY BECAME 'HAZARDS' TO VISITING MOTORISTS COZ MOST OF THE SIGN BOARDS (DIRECTIONS) WERE BLOCKED BY THE LEAFS/BRANCHES!
LAST NITE ALONG A DARK ROAD IN BANGI, WE HAD TO REALLY REALLY SLOW DOWN TO PEEK THRU THE LEAVES TO FIND THE DIRECTION TO OUR DESTINATION!

ALFATIHAH, AMIN
Tun,
First of all, I would like to say Alhamdullillah that you are well again.
I like this topic very much and I would like to comment since you brought it up.
I have been living in KL for quite sometime although I am from JB. The traffic in KL is another matter entirely but I think the landscaping in KL should be better managed. Talking about trees, like you said, in town areas , they should be planted evenly, the trees should be uniform and even in height. In reality, this is not the case, there are small tress and big trees planted untidily. The view of KLCC is magnificent but the rest do not blend well and spoil the character of the place.
There should be more trees planted as the development of Klang Valley had destroy the existing vegetation. The temperature nowadays in KL is very unsettling.
We should decorate the capital of our nation to become a garden city with beautiful trees for those people who reside in KL and for the visitors.
Another thing which I think is relevant is the government should set up more recreational park. Currently there are not many recreational park with trees and garden that can accomodate the number of occupants in Klang Valley, most of them are too crowded in weekend.
Recreational park do not generate income for the nation but it is a necessity for the people so that the citizen can exercise and spend time with family. Otherwise, the people in KL will feel agitated. Most of the capital of the world have adequate spaces for recreation.
In addition we can plant trees as well at this parks and enjoy more of nature despite the concrete, buildings and traffic that we have to endure during working hours

1-The real motivation behind the military involvement of the West in Libya is mainly only one thing, and that is oil.As usual its the capitalist exploiting the politicians to pursue their dreams.
2-For so long the strong leadership of Gadaffi and its staunch anti West stand had been in their way. That is why the current Govt must be toppled at all cost.
3-At the same time any strong Arab nation is also not in the interest of the boss of the West,Israel,a nation that is also nearing the installation of her Grand Plan in the Holy land.
4-Once Libya has been liberated from Gadaffi she would lose that hard fought independence movement initiated by the Lion of the Desert Omar Mukhtar against the fascist Italian colonization. They may be freed of Gadaffi but in the end they will come under the control of their very obvious enemy once again.
5-Do the Libyans think the West is sincerely helping them out of their love for them?Do the Libyans ever wonder who would care for them more Muammar al Gadaffi or the West, the people who have been killing Muslims in the millions through their Shock and Awe powerplay and trade sanctions as collateral damage for the death of a few thousand of their people caused by a suspect named Osama Ben Laden.
5-All the dissidents who seek other nations' support to oust out their own Govt are only traitors to their nations. For all you know they may be the real corrupted guys who have been bought by the Western nations to plant the evil lies into the minds of the Libyan to take arms and rise against Gadaffi.Just like how Anwar almost succeeded to oust our very own Gadaffi for nepotism and cronysm many years ago.
6-Had Gadaffi been nice or ever willing to kow-tow to the West he would have been protected even though he may have a record of killing his own people, etc.
7-Once Libya fall,Iran would be next so that there will be no more strong Arab/Muslim nation around to pose any threat whatsoever to the installation of Jerusalem by their boss.
Thanks Tun

*******1. Hutan***********
Lagi tinggi bangunan lagi tinggi pendapatan. Lagi besar bangunan lagi besar habuan.
Bagaimanapun Tun, penduduk sama-sama perlu dipertanggungjawabkan.
Sedarilah wahai semua orang Melayu!!!Yang bakal menjatuhkan PAS bukannya UMNO tetapi kalangan orang PAS sendiri.
Learn from the experts
Sekarang PAS dan PKR tiada perbezaan lagi. Bak lagu Zainal Abidin liriknya begini (Nota: penulis lirik tiada maksud politik tetapi mempunyai maksud lain)
Perlukah lagi kita sokong PAS?
Ustaz Hadi dan Ustaz Azizan hang pa kena duduk diam2 dalam mesyuarat ye, kena dengaq suara majoriti. Kalau tak kena cara hang pa seperti Dato Hadi kata Barisan Kabinet PAS (dengan sedikit tambahan saya) dengan Presiden Boneka Ustaz Hadi Awang??
====================================================================
Orang Melayu sedarlah, UMNO sentiasa berusaha mempertingkatkan martabat dan peranan ulama dalam pemerintahan kerajaan. Sebaliknya PAS kebelakangan ini memperturunkan peranan ulama ke peti sejuk setakat Dewan Ulama saja????
Ustaz Hadi pun kata PAS dah tak guna istilah negara Islam tetapi negara kebajikan.
Jangan pusing cerita UMNO hanya mengkayakan orang UMNO sebab PAS kalau memerintah pun tak tentu betul kerana semuanya letak kepada iman.

Good morning Ayahanda Tun,
181. COMMON SENSE IN PLANTING TREE TO SAVE :-O GREENNER MISSION
182. Ayahanda Tun's point 6. But there are times when planting on the road sides, we want to create an avenue of trees. Then we should plant just one row of trees or palm trees perfectly aligned and separated. The tree should be the same all the way through. But when we want to recreate forests let the trees be scattered haphazardly like in the forest.
183. I do not know whether Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai has heard of a pepatah "Cantonese" with 4 words only that says,
Tuen - To Create a Fake Illusion/Perspective/Perception
Cheung - of the Orginal Article
Chui - by manipulating
Yi - its Noble Meaning
which can explain the whole true scenario and circumstances?
184. Ms Felixia Yeap, (got Chinese surname like that ar?) the surname is identical to Ip, Yeh, Yap or Yip written in Chinese full character as "Leaf" which can never be simplified nor change due to "FAMILY" brought up and must be maintained ALL THE WAY.
185. "Yeap" has edi gave her honest answer why she feels good in being a Bunny Girl in Macau.
186. Datuk Seri Wong knows why Stanley Ho's daughter is doing so well in stablizing and developing her FAMILY GAMBLING BUSINESS in Macau and the world?
187. She knows how Commonwealth Federal Constituency and Media work in reality because she knows how to differentiate professionalism and rubbishism in Journalism.
188. Did Felicia answer “Why should we be identified by Chinese, Indian or Malay. We are Malaysians. Americans identify themselves by their nationality and not their ethnicity. Why can't we do the same?”
189. Being a Chief in Editorial Department, he is not equipped with the technical courses of "know how in business and economy" to manage and develop the current platform to cushion The Star Group revenue before corpoarte tax to be more resilient in future by categorizing and pricing advertisement revenue to tap FMCG, Lower Middle, Upper Middle and Niche Egg Markets.
190. If he continues to think narrowly by "Worship God" and he is the master of all eggs, then the phrase of Hey Move On You Old Man! will be a reality to him only.
191. "To Learn To Let Go Rationally" is the toughest job in human history, I am wondering whether Datuk Seri Wong dare to take this move by liberalizing The Star Group's revenue before corporate tax to create more chiefs and journalists in Media Industry?
192. What is in his mind, those who are experts and competitors in the field don't have to spell them out.
193. I sincerely hope that Datuk Wong should engage a higher level degree, eg:-MBA, in developing his career as CE to break throught the superstitious wall to keep "The Star Going All The Way" since 80s politically, economically and socially.

Don’t play, play with this Bunny
By RASHVINJEET S. BEDI
rashvin@thestar.com.my
Some may say the Playboy Bunny gig objectifies women but Malaysian model Felixia Yeap feels it's just a job.
WHEN the Playboy Club Sands Macau staged a “Bunny Hunt” for its soon-to-be-opened establishment last year, 600 Bunny hopefuls from around the world turned up to be auditioned. Only 16 made the cut, one of whom was Malaysian model Felixia Yeap. And she did not even have to go through the audition; she was hand-picked by the Macau Club manager.
Following her stint as a Bunny, Yeap says she has received a string of indecent proposals. One man even posted a private message on her Facebook, offering her RM22,000 for sex, she says.
The former kindergarten teacher, who has become immune to such nonsense, reacted by publicly shaming these people she posted their remarks on the wall for everyone to see.
“That is not the way to talk to a girl,” states the attractive 1.73m tall lass with a toss of her gold-bleached, waist-length hair.
Dressed in a sexy navy low-cut top with the words “99% myself” emblazoned on the front, black tights and flats, Yeap, 24, made heads turn when she arrived for this interview at a Subang eatery.
“There is a misconception that Bunnies are scandalous, but a Bunny is essentially a hostess/waitress at the Playboy Club,” she asserts.
It may seem unbelievable but Yeap says she has never opened a Playboy magazine. She also insists she will never pose nude because of her upbringing.
“It would go against my principles and I wouldn't want to disappoint my fans,” she adds.
But since working as a Bunny, her popularity has certainly risen, if the number of her Facebook fans is an indicator. At last count, Yeap has almost 29,000 fans on her fan page.
But there are no airs about this down-to-earth Ipoh-born model who has made KL her base.
“I'm not a celebrity,” she says with a laugh.
Feminists may say the Playboy Bunny gig exploits and objectifies women, but the articulate Yeap begs to differ.
“We were treated more like princesses, but people are entitled to their opinions,” she says, adding that her mother supported her venture as well.
The Bunny costume is essentially a custom-made corset complete with satin bunny ears, cotton tails, fishnets and matching high-heels, she describes. The costumes are very exclusive and have to be returned after the six-hour work shift, she adds.
“The first rule is to never let anyone touch us, not even the tail' or ears'. Customers who do so will be thrown out,” relates Yeap, who saw a fellow Bunny being “harassed” but counts herself lucky not to have gone through a similar experience.
“Working as a Bunny is a tough job that requires a lot of mental strength. Bunnies also have to follow a lot of protocol,” she says, taking the Bunny Dip as an example. The Bunny Dip refers to a manoeuvre where one leans backwards while bending at the knees with the left knee lifted and tucked behind the right leg. It's a tough but important stance, and it has to be done carefully so that nothing spills out, she explains while pointing at her chest.
There's also the Bunny Perch the way Bunnies sit on the back of a chair, sofa, or railing when they want to rest.
Yeap says that even the women patrons at the Macau Club were excited by the presence of the Bunnies and many wanted to know how they could become one.
Yeap was in Macau for the launch of the club and was one of five Bunnies featured in the club's promotions.
“It was a good opportunity and I gained some experience,” she says, adding that she was offered a six-month contract but declined as she did not want a lengthy break from her modelling career.
Altogether, she was a Bunny for one month from November to December last year.
Yeap certainly knows what she wants. In 2009, she pulled out of the Miss Malaysia-World pageants because of contractual disagreements that, she says, would have disrupted her earnings.
“I'm not a diva. I just have my own principles,” says Yeap who sees Brazilian Gisele Bundchen as her role model.
Yeap describes herself as homely, spends a lot of time on Facebook, dislikes partying and doesn't smoke or drink.
“I'm actually a very boring person.”
She likes reading fiction and is now in the midst of Norwegian Wood by Japanese author Haruki Murakami.
She also likes cars and, she says, used to fight with her brother over toy cars when they were much younger. She drives a Satria Neo. Her dream car is a Lamborghini Gallardo but she does not believe in purchasing one even if she can afford it.
“I would rather buy a house for my mum in Ipoh or give money to charity. I'm happy with my third-hand car now,” she declares.
Yeap says she has gone through hard times, earning less than RM1,000 while working at a kindergarten during a break from modelling several years ago.
Back then, she recalls, she could only afford to rent a RM100 storeroom that was barely large enough for her to stretch her legs. The width of the room was just two arms length and could only fit a narrow foldable bed, with space left for her luggage and laptop.
“It made me grow up and realise that life is not easy,” she shares.
Although Yeap enjoyed working with kids at the kindergarten, she found the pay too low, and thus returned to modelling.
FHM magazine spotted Yeap in her comeback bid, featured her on the cover and the rest, as they say, is history.
“You have to keep believing in yourself and work hard. If you are passionate about what you do, you will succeed,” says Yeap who describes her mum as her best friend and inspiration.
Realising that modelling has a short shelf-life, Yeap, who has a diploma in fashion design, hopes to branch out to singing and acting. She also dreams of opening a day-care or a car modification centre.
She is currently unattached and admits that she is not actively looking for a life partner.
While modelling has taken her to various countries, Yeap says she still loves Malaysia best and doesn't like to be away from home for long.
“The best thing about Malaysia is our many cultures,” says Yeap who listens to songs by Siti Nurhaliza and Ning Baizura, among others, and enjoys Yasmin Ahmad's Sepet.
She says she is fed up with the race-based rhetoric propagated by certain politicians and is sad that people are becoming more polarised, especially youngsters.
“Why should we be identified by Chinese, Indian or Malay. We are Malaysians. Americans identify themselves by their nationality and not their ethnicity. Why can't we do the same?”

Good day Ayahanda Tun.
Landscaping is not (just) about administration or policing beautification designs. It deals with nature and environment and how to make the best use of resources, utilise and arrange them in harmony with living conditions. There is much technicalities and understanding of the elements and materials used in the design for beauty and utilitarian purposes.
The creation of National Landscape Department within the purview of INTAN is a an attempt at futility given the training background of PSD officers. It is not merely a matter of administration and policing activities of landscaping whether carried by the trained or untrained. Or is it mean of post creation for top level PSD officials?
Rightly, NLD should be under the wings of the Ministry of Agriculture by which landscape is more associated with.

A'kum Tun,
Great to hear you are back to the scene. It would be dull without you around.
Planting trees? Yes, we often forget the simple things that we can improve around us to make life better. Sometimes we concentrate to much on all the sophisticated things in the name to make life better when in the end we are just making things more complicated.
Well said Tun, i'll start planting trees of my own too!
Salam,
1.Pemimpin Malayisa tidak bodoh

4.Yang bodoh dan dayus ialah orang:
a. Memperalatkan agama sehingga orang Islam berpecah.
b. Membenarkan orang bukan Islam menghina Islam
sekiranya nak bina negara Islam'

Corruption definitely help run the economy in illegal way.
there is a pros and cons either which sites win.
take a look on old model.
the system is generated only himself can operate.without, its collaped,we cannot blame the post prim minis,i believe even current on that moment was chosen, the result still the same.the egos of the party because of they win for so many times.of course also him weak personality make the monkey finally climb on top to get the bananas.the pros is the lesson we gets not to be egos when win since no permanent things in this world.
if the opposition wins, since no perfect in this world,is not easy to restruct.take example of a grocery shop,is easy to take down the one which has long operates rather s than to open new grocer where u need to build all new customer base line, and of course the risk is higher when the people suffers.
the question is who is to run the company?
we need to be humble all the time,i dont think when someone with all the motor cycles with blue lamp like the road only for the big one will please the rakyat.
Salam Tun.
Allow me to insert additional words to Tun's blissful opening statement,
"Malaysia is one of the very few countries blessed with a wondrous climate and soil that enables trees to take root and grow very fast, well sheltered and protected from the very severe & catastrophic natural disasters....."
So wonderful to be a Malaysian.
So wonderful to be living in a metropolitan Malaysia.
So wonderful to be part of a 'Truly Asia' population!
Let the so-called big hats go anywhere so they can bark & growl forever, but here!
Let's complete the 'brain drain' process because we keep hearing from them and yet they are still around! Go now!
Let those ingrates that keep demanding more & better things migrate to 'who know where'!
Your penniless forefathers once left their motherlands for good, so why can't you do likewise. If life is forever so miserable here, then buy your happiness elsewhere!
By all means, go! The exit doors are wide open, always.
We can give assurance that you won't be missed!
WE SHALL OVERCOME!!
WE CAN EASILY OVERCOME!
There are huge numbers of us here with untapped potential, and just waiting for the opportunity.
Oh beautiful & wonderful wonderful wonderful Malaysia, when will those bigots leave us in peace!
Assalamualaikum Tun.
Sebagaimana arah kita berfikir.
Terima kasih Tun.
Dear Tun,
1. When declared illegal in 1948, the communists decided to flee into the forests in which they thought they could regain their strengths. Equipped with years of jungle experience, they believed they would survive in the rich tropical forests.
2. Unfortunately, the communists were wrong. Many of them were in starvation after the supplies of food were cut off under the Briggs’ Plan in the 1950s. The forests of Malaya did not offer enough food to them.
3. In case of war, the same situation may happen to us.
4. While trees are to be planted in scatter, they are also to be grown with purpose. Perhaps an input, if not an involvement, from the military is necessary when we are doing reforestation.
assalamualaikum,
.
assallammualaikum,TDMM
smuga ALLAH bersama orang yang lurus
tak semisti nya jubah lebar > serban bersanggul tinggi > berjanggut laboh tak makan suap
kami amat mengasihi mu dan berdoa supaya terhindar drp segala fitnah manusia zalim
Dearest Tun
1-Glad you are in the pink again.
2-I concur with Amin Tan and I think a well planted forest is better than a harphazard natural jungle looking forest.
3-If we want a garden in our compound surely we want to plan the garden to be as beautiful as possible with a selection of the more beautiful and valuable species only and not let all and sundry to grow haphazard.
4-A secondary forest must not pretend to be a natural forest. It must look as secondary as possible with lots of tummy friendly species like rambutan durian nangka jambu etc, etc. It should be like a extremely huge dusun.Bet the tourist would love it.
5-Take care Tun ,don't worry be happy always.
Thanks Tun.
Salam Sejahtera Tun dan Keluarga
Shukur Alhamdulillah Tun telah beransur pulih,
Kami mendoakan Tun pulih sepenuh nya saperti sediakala.

Salam Tun.
Its good to hear from you .... semoga cepat sembuh dan kembali sihat seperti sediakala.
Salam bahagia Tun.
And I am glad Tun is on the road to recovery.
Reforestation nowadays are more of a publicity stunt than actually wanting to so some good to the nature. FRIM and everyone else are doing it half heartily, probably due to lack of funds or attention provided to them.
Tun, nowadays Ministers that are in-charged of their respective ministries are not active and engaging. They will only appear when disasters happened or when there' s a VVIP showing up for an event.
As a result, many of these once good agencies are neglected and abandoned by these ministers. Good and dedicated staffers are now no longer actively doing their part to preserve nature and to promote its goodness to the public.
I can't remember when our current PM have spoken about our forest or the need to preserve them. All we hear is about racial disunity, corruptions, consumer price hikes, etc..all these is very commercial and depressing.
The rakyat have mentioned about the rape of the Borneo forest by the powerful Taib "consortium" but the government have made no effort to say otherwise.
Meaning we know about all these ill doings and we need to keep silence about it?
Perak with its daily diminishing lime stones are turning the Kinta valley into a hot-bed. There is no effort to reforest flatten hills.
Anyway Tun, the bottom line is our Ministers in charge of such issues are not doing what they supposed to do. If they are effective, you will see all levels of government throughout the nation will have some sort of programs lined up for reforestations.
Salam bahagia Tun, and wishes you a speedy and strong recovery.
Drink more water Tun, weather in Malaysia is changing every day.
YABHG Tun,
Assalamualaikum Tun.
Harap Tun makin bertambah sihat.Saya pernah pergi ke IJN betulkan jantung anak saya.PDA.Sekarang dah okey.
Tapi kalau melawat Tun pun tentu tak dapat masuk jugak.
Baru-baru ni pun tidur kat hospital teman tonsil anak pulak.Sekarang pun dah okey jugak.
Terima kasih Tun.
Dear Tun, and Chedet bloggers,
As we all know, each state government classifies their forests into several categories, but to most of us the public, we think in terms of two main categories, i.e. the forests to be preserved (cant extract timber, e.g. Belum in Perak, National Parks in Pahang and Endau Rompin etc), and forests that can be logged, i.e. the production forests. State government gets revenues from the timbers they sell out to concession holders. However, sometimes state forest reserves are also degazetted to make way for agriculture or oil palm or some other development, that’s when we are usually most unhappy. There are catchment and watershed areas that had seen de-alienated. Also at times totally protected forests are also “ransacked” for some reason or another. That’s why we need non-greedy exco members, and those with no rich logging towkey behind them. Well that’s another story.
Unlike the temperate forests which tend to be of the same species, mainly pine, our forests have a high diversity. There are hundreds of tree timber species, and some non-woody species like rotan, bamboo and some that grow on top of other trees such ferns and wild orchids, and there mosses and all kinds of botanical species. This is where we in the tropics are special. These trees and botanical species support the rich forest fauna we have from mammals large and small, reptiles, birds, insects, beetles, butterflies, fish and prawns in the streams, all kinds. It’s a special gift from God.
Not all trees in our forests have commercial or timber values. Those that are logged (e.g. meranti, nyatoh etc) are mainly semi-hardwood timbers, easy to cut for various downstream commercial uses. Some species, e.g. cengal (called belian in Sarawak, Sabah) are real super hardwood that is almost difficult to find nowadays. The loggers tend to chop down commercial valued trees when their prices are high, but in the process damage others also. One typical tree with no commercial value is the Ficus sp., (Malays call pohon beringin). It’s big, huge, and it grows very tall with heavy branching. This tree is unique, it is always the home of many kinds of birds in the forests. They feed on the insects, fruits, honey and small animals. A wide diversity of trees also allows good pollinations to take place when carriers such as squirrels and birds jump from one tree to another. Hence our forests are truly unique.
There are also forest species that have F&B and medicinal values, such as Tongkat Ali and Kacip Fatimah. If you talk to the local botanists, you will be astonished with the richness of our Malaysian forests. Apart from what can be extracted, there are also species of scientific values, especially in terms of genetic materials. Scientists call it the genebank. The Americans go one step further by identifying the genetic materials and put a claim on the intellectual property. They had even claimed the DNA of basmathi rice, so beware, and learn something about our forests. For all we know, the answers to cancer and many human ailments are right there in our forests, but not yet fully studied. Thus the few virgin forests that we have left need to be totally preserved.
One species which we take for granted and being stolen right in our eyes is the Gaharu trees. One kg of its extract can fetch over RM20,000 or more. It’s used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. The best ones come from the forests, stolen by Gaharu thieves right at this moment and nobody does anything about it. Well Malaysians are very nice.
The teak trees we see along our PLUS highways are commercially planted in commercial forests all over the world for mainly the furniture industry, but it is not really a forest species from our forest. However, it’s good for landscaping; it looks very attractive, big leaves, nice flowers, good branching, nice looking stems. I call it gorgeous.
Coming back to Tun’s ideas, yes I think we ought to replant what had been deforested, so that the reforested areas shall comprise of a wide diversity of local forest species to recover the loss of our forest ecosystem. I know they are doing this at some places, but not many. This can, and should be done with forest areas that had been severely logged, as well as abandoned agricultural areas especially where the ownership is so complicated. New logging concessions should have a reforestation clause.
(Talking of which there is much of the lost mangrove areas along our coastline that ought to be reforested back with mangrove species.)
The urban areas, especially our big cities ought to have forest parks (or call it Forest Garden Parks) to add beauty and aesthetics to the city, cool the micro climate, provide habitat for birds and friendly faunas, for the public to appreciate and use as recreation, as well as for educational uses. These would serve much purpose, including cultivating family outings and family fun.
There are the forest species that had been proven adaptable to our urban climate (see them in KLCC, UPM campus), but I think the public need to know the diversity and beauty of forest species that we have. Plant the teaks which can provide good shade, Gaharu for educational purpose, meranti, nyatoh, tulang daing, tembusu, the many palms we have, flowering shrubs, foliage shrubs, bamboos. Similar trees planted in rows are nice to look at, very orderly, systematic and functional. But we can go beyond that and demonstrate various other functions and roles of our forest species.
It’s too bad that for so long our society had always been scaring people from going to the forests, with stories of “hantu”, “penunggu”, “orang bunian”. Modern as I am I still adhere to the old time “pantang larang” when entering the forests, and so far I am still ok, and have not got married with any orang bunian. But seriously, we ought to make our tropical forests to come to the city by creating a few small ones wherever there are empty spaces. Get some rich logging towkeys to contribute, after all they had been chopping the forest trees and making so much money.
Our big cities, KL, Shah Alam, Seremban, Melaka, Ipoh, Alor Setar, Kangar, Penang, Kuantan, JB, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bharu, K. Kinabalu, Sandakan, Kuching, Miri, have adequate areas for “Forest Gardens in the City”. So are many other smaller ones. (We have enough shopping complexes already, don’t know what more to buy.) But we lack the city forests. That will make us unique, and well, better educated, more responsible, ecologically literate and more refined in the eyes of others. We too will feel better, good for our health and well being. I welcome comments on these ideas, svp.
Chedet Admin,
It seems to me that the hyperlink problems on http://chedet.co.cc/chedetblog/ site are still unsolved on specific entries and archive pages.
1. Advert solved.
I am sure that you have identified the main 'malware' problem which was sourced from the embedded adverts. Gladly you have removed them permanently. Yes, the adverts might help maintain the website costs but I do think that our Tun do have enough money to maintain the site. Plus, Tun posts are text based and doesn’t contain any pictures or videos embedded within them which make them low in bandwidth usage.
2. Hyperlink problems.
I am not very familiar with movabletype but i do think that while you were removing the advert placeholders, accidently you’ve removed some of the hyperlink colouring codes. The hyperlink seems to be in 'white' for both visited and unvisited links which is the same colour as the page background 'white'. In exception, the problem does not occur on the front page of the chedet.co.cc but are persistent on all dedicated post pages. To be exact they are the ARCHIVE pages and the pages linked after each ‘Continue Reading’ phrase (e.g, Continue Reading PLANTING TREES http://chedet.co.cc/chedetblog/2011/05/planting-trees.html#more).
I have tested the pages with windows XP and windows 7 machines with several browsers (i.e., chrome, IE9, IE8, mozilla, safari, and opera). The problem is persistent throughout the tests.
In assumption of that i guess that you might have: a) removed the page link to the css file OR b) you might have removed the css stylesheet which the pages referred to OR c) you accidently tweaked some of the movable type template options which construct those pages.
3. Suggestions on solution.
a) Rebuild the site with the latest movabletype. This might solve the problem by returning the site to the native settings. Need some works to reorganise the site to the current setting though. Mind the build/upgrade, the build/upgrade should be a stable upgrade, not a beta or alpha MT version.
b) Manually retrace the advert links removal process you had. Maybe you were watching a football match at that time and accidently tweaked some settings or codes.
A friendly reminder. On any changes, make sure you have backed up the entries and user login dataset.
Have a great weekend :)

Wellcome back ! Nice to hear from you again.
Sorry, may i give my view on other matters?
I have notice that the country is not heading for the right direction......vision 2020. I doubt that we will achieve it by then, why?
Malaysia is a rich country as we have rubber, oil palm,.....etc but unfortunately we don't see it cos all our money/reserve gone. To where - corruptions. When BNM advertise in papers that we have USD100 billions in reserve, it is nothing to be shout/proud of. Why not advertise our debts as well? Assume it is USD90 billion, then what is USD10 billion? Nothing.
Nowdays we see the police, lawyers, judges are busy with unimportant things. People sue here, sue there. The only person win here is the lawyer. No matter win or lose, they still receive their cheque!
People should put the country first otherwise nobody including themselves will live comfortably. Then again we talk about corruptions. We can't stop or elliminate it but only reduce. Lots of people like to run/chose for election cos they know that once you are elected everything will come to them.....FREE.
I have keep with paper cuttings of daily cases happening in M'sia and some after 10 years the case is still open. Maybe SOMEBODY hope that after long time the people will forget it. There are many example. If i say it, will i be sued, put in ISA cos it involve....
The 1Malaysia is a very good programme but it is not really in practise - all Malaysian know. Recently a relative of mine, their daughter got 11 As in exam but do not get any scholarship. Their friends who got 4 As sms to her that they got matriculation scholarship! Who are they, your guess is as good as mine.
If i want to write everything the book is as thick as "A Doctor in the House".
By the way, how can i have an autograph of you? Sent the book to you or have a tea time with you! Maybe you are the only one in Malaysia can speak up openly without/scare being sue.
Take care, we still need your advise and imaginations.
Salam Tun,
YABhg Tun,
....unfortunately, the town where I live, Local Government turn all available land into concrete jungle!! Yes....we have more shops than parking lots too..
Beloved Tun,
Your piece on “Planting Trees” reminds me of “The Heart of the Tree”, a poem by American poet Henry Cuyler Bunner(1855 - 1896) which goes as follows:
What does he plant who plants a tree?
He plants a friend of sun and sky;
He plants the flag of breezes free;
The shaft of beauty, towering high.
He plants a home to heaven anigh
For song and mother-croon of bird
In hushed and happy twilight heard --
The treble of heaven's harmony --
These things he plants who plants a tree.
What does he plant who plants a tree?
He plants cool shade and tender rain,
And seed and bud of days to be,
And years that fade and flush again;
He plants the glory of the plain;
He plants the forest's heritage;
The harvest of a coming age;
The joy that unborn eyes shall see --
These things he plants who plants a tree.
What does he plant who plants a tree?
He plants, in sap and leaf and wood,
In love of home and loyalty
And far-cast thought of civic good --
His blessing on the neighbourhood
Who in the hollow of His hand
Holds all the growth of all our land --
A nation's growth from sea to sea
Stirs in his heart who plants a tree.
Malaysia may be blessed with a climate and soil that enable trees to take root and grow very fast. But nothing can match the blessing that our country has in having in our midst a statesman extraordinaire who never seems to fail to share his thoughts and ideas even from the seclusion of his hospital bed where he was brought in hardly a week ago.
I know that Tun Siti and the doctors are taking good care of you at IJN, Tun, but all the same, do not overstretch yourself and give Che Det blog a rest!
My thoughts and prayers, and those of every member of my family, are always with you and Tun Siti.
With much affection.
Tunku Sofiah
Salam YAB & diKasihi Tun,
Terima kasih Tun.
** Semoga Allah SWT sentiasa melindungi Tun sekeluarga **
Dear Tun,
I am sorry i have to disagree with you on reforestation. Ours is the rain forest as such there are many types of trees, plants, insects, worms and wild animals in the original setting of virgin jungle. It is not reasonable for anyone to reproduce a replica of its original virginity. When we want to replace the harvested valuable trees in the tropical forest, surely we would not try to cultivate trees or plants of very low commercial value. We would only replant trees of high commercial value and in a way most profitable to the entrepreneurs. If the cost of replanting in straight rows is the same as that of replanting haphazardly, surely it is more logical and pleasing to the beholders if reforestation is done in a more orderly way. It is a matter of opinion.
In Europe and Scandinavia, reforestation of pine trees is a huge industry in terms of supply to paper industry and building industry. Last year, I had the opportunity to visit the country side of Dublin, Ireland. The replanting of pine trees in such vast mountains was amazing and overwhelming. The scale and vastness of the reforestation is no child play. Wallahuallam.
amin tan
Assalamualaikum Tun,
1. I guess those are tree farms.
2. Those who plant the trees never meant to keep them that way.
3. They will cut the trees 'again' when the time comes (i.e., the jatis along the North-South highway) and the roads will be de-green once again.
4. There are reasons why forest trees grow haphazard naturally. They do not grow instantly that way. Natural selections; and they are the best.
5. Imitating those require years of studies and experts.
6. FRIM, its time to show that the taxes are well spent (for real).
fbm
Well, I agree that more trees should be planted. I bet everyone does. Sadly, everywhere I go now (especially in the past seven months, many trees were chopped off and houses or road being built. It really started to get hotter (not warmer). Government kept bragging about going green, somehow they are doing the opposite. Well, unless they were bragging about going green as in building more GREEN COLOUR BUILDING (which nowhere to be seen, except for Econsave supermarket nearby where I live in Kajang). Or are we going green as in going GREENHOUSE effect?

Assalamulaikum,
Dear Yang Berbahagia Tun Mahathir and Para Blogger yang dihormati,
Allow me to divert from the present discussion....
I am now reading your autobiography and reaching the chapter on Look East Policy. Let me share some of my experience visiting Japan last year. I was invited to an International Conference in Kobe and in addition was given the honor to speak during the Conference Banquet. The following is my short speech. I will send you the accompany presentation separately.
----
Banquet Speech
(9th International Conference Nano-Molecular Electronics, Kobe 14-16 December 2010)
By Penyu...
Ladies and gentlemen,
First and foremost let me thank the organiser for inviting me to give this banquet speech. It is a great honour and a pleasure to me to be given this opportunity. I find it impossible to refuse, even though I am unsure of what am I suppose to say.
As a foreigner visiting Japan, naturally what is more interesting and desirable (to talk about) is to relate my cultural experience, since Japanese culture fascinates me most. My fascinations are on the followings: 3Ts, bento, Fuji, maples and kimono.
Limited by time and space, I will touch quickly the 3T’s, even though I have so much to say for each of these.
The 3 T’s, refers to “Toilet, Train and Technology”.
Simply, the toilet in Japan is the best in the world. I have never seen toilet and public convenience being taken so seriously and with so much respect that I even witnessed (to my amassment) a toilet cleaner bowed down to an empty toilet before he cleaned it.
There is no other country in the world, where ordinary household can afford sophisticated toilet with warm seat, many functional buttons.
In many countries, especially in the so called, the third world, toilet is considered the dirtiest place, which should be ignored. This simple observed correlation has many implications and ramifications but I shall not elaborate here.
Worldwide, there is a growing number of Japanophilies (people who loves Japan even before coming to Japan). I must be one of them (the earlier ones) and our first contact to Japan was through the cartoon and anime.
My favourite was Ultraman. Whenever I take the train ride, I cannot help but having the vivid imagination of a big bad monster smashing the criss-crossing Japanese trains and Ultraman came to the rescue.
The commuter train culture in Japan is another one of my fascination. From the local/rapid trains, subways and shinkansen, I cannot help thinking how is the time table managed so well and so precisely coordinated.
The shinkansen service has never had any collision and yet runs 4-5 trains hourly between Osaka and Tokyo, while in Malaysia, over the same distance (eg. Kuala Lumpur and Penang), there is only one train per day! (and sometimes late!!!)
I do not want to elaborate on how I admire Japanese technology (made in Japan), but rather to comment on one of the inspiring characters, doraemon, the cat that has all sort of gadgets (technology) in his pocket to solve any problem. Doraemon's name is a combination of dora as in dorayaki and emon which is the end name of a samurai. He is indeed my favourite cartoon character and through him, I understand Japanese technological sense and sensibility. He is a symbol of Japanese technology samurai and he has technology in his pocket. That is very cool for an otaku. He loves dorayaki and so am I.
I have made three cultural visits to Japan; the first was sponsored by the Japanese Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS) and hosted by Prof. Shunsuke Kobayashi (also known as Mr.LCD), who was at the Tokyo Agriculture University, Department of Electrical and Electronics. My second and third visits were hosted by Prof. Akihiko Sugimura, Department of Information System Engineering, Osaka Sangyo University.
I thank both generous hosts and the Institutions, who sponsored my cultural scientific visits. And I would like to elaborate on what I have learnt in this aspect.
In my country, following the old scientific culture, our Universities are fairly rigidly segmented between the traditional disciplines, of Engineering and Science, etc... On the other hand in Japan there are many non-traditional faculties and departments eg. in Tsukuba University, there is a College of Engineering Science, consisting of departments of Applied Physics , Quantum and Electronic , Applied Condensed Matter and Materials and Molecular Engineering.
Science or scientia is a Greek word for knowledge, kagaku or rika in Japanese.
This is usually associated with the natural knowledge, which must be the same everywhere. But scientific culture is “how science is practised”, differs in different countries.
The whole embodiment of science is made up of layer upon layer of knowledge, like an anion model. Its core is mathematics, (the abstraction using number). The next layer is physics (the laws of Nature); followed by the chemistry layer, (“change” through the molecular concept). The next, is the description of life and living things in the biological layer.
The outer layer must be the application layer, containing engineering and medicine for examples, and the outermost layer of knowledge is all the problem layers from politic to war, from conflict to crime, from poverty to pollution. Problem solving approach from out layer to inner layers and bring out.
Unlike the traditional scientific compartments, Nihong scientific culture is very interdisciplinary. Many Nihong Universities offer new departments and faculties, reflecting uncommon integration and synthesis, which is very refreshing and new to me. Scientific practises today, of course, are very multi-disciplinary worldwide, attempting to solve problems crossing the often blurred boundaries and utilizing more precise knowledge from the inner layers.
My scientific cultural visits to Japan and this conference were all driven by the same desire to break the traditional prison-like science compartments into the real world of beautiful chaos.
Thank you.
Enjoy your dinner and いただきます
Salam Tun and Family,
I would like to use this opportunity to wish you well and good health. I have read your book halfway and found many interesting facts, knowledge and also can get to know you rather well than before.
You have inspired me a lot from your book and broaden my horizon about how things were in this country and the world. I would like to thank you for the book, you leadership and also what you have contributed to the Malays, Malaysian and Malaysia.
As normal citizen, I may have uttered words about you before which is merely based on rumours and may be a slander. I may also disagreed with you before and uttered bad words about you out of emotions. As a Muslim, I regretted it a lot not just to you and many others I would have sinned. I would like to appologise from you and hope that you can forgive me as I would like to seek pardon of my wrongdoings for the sake of my 'ukhrawi' journey.
Thank you.
Assalamualaikum Tun,
This time, your post bring me smile..
That natural sense of cynical humour is still within.. :)
Yes sir! Let nature shapes its form.
Salam Tun,
... Im glad you are OK! Miss you already... =)

Dear Sir and Chedet bloggers,
I hope and pray you are gettting better, Tun. All of us hope and wish you speedy recovery. I like the topic on trees.
Many years ago I had an argument with a very rich logging towkey, who seemed to get logging concessions quite easily. He said that all those old trees in the forest should be harvested, otherwise they will die and fall to the ground eventually. Rugilah, he said. It’s income to the government, denied. That’s true.
However, I argued, from the ecological point of view, these old trees will die and fall to the ground after many hundred years, and then they will rot and decompose and return the minerals and rich moisture contained in the trees back to the forest floor. Also, the process of decomposition will release much needed nutrients to enrich various organisms which provide the substrates and nutrients to the young and emerging trees and food to the many types of small faunas, insects and other invertebrates, which, going around the ecological cycle, will give foods to the many many faunal species and wildlife in the forest. So we have a rich tropical forest that provides the base for our rich biodiversity. The forest floor, with so much decomposed materials and forest litters, absorb the moisture, retain the water from rains, to release it slowly back to the lower grounds in the form of streams, waterfalls, while avoiding the occurrence of landslides and erosion. This of course brings no money, but is important for ecology. It also serves as the catchment for our water supply, as well as places for eco-tourism, not to mention the cooling effects.
The rich and well connected Tan Sri towkey seemed to be more concerned about taking out more logs from the forest which brings money, because he said, it’s a waste not to take the logs out. I don’t like arguing with a standard 6 graduate who was already a tan sri, with gold watch, big emerald ring and gold necklace and expensive speck rims. Any more argument is a waste of time and it makes one’s intelligence to drop a few levels off.
I am telling the above because very often decisions made by approving authorities lack or ignore ecological principles and their basic fundamentals. I call it the Rich Towkey Mentality (RTM). Apart from similar trees being grown in straight lines, there should also be considerations for more diversity of tree species, trees of various types that can, if well blended and cleverly arranged, will not only look aesthetic, but also provide good habitat for friendly faunas, and can even serve as small watersheds.
Needless to say, the minds of ecologists are quite different from many others, especially the RTM people, in that profit is disregarded, and not considered. It’s the ecological functions that’s primary. Here in Malaysia we can look at the Botanical Garden of Penang, the Lake Garden of KL, the Taiping Lake Garden for a good mix of tree species that can be used for public recreation and appreciation. But they were constructed during the colonial time. Nevertheless, a good place to see is the KLCC, which was 100% local ingenuity in park planning, tree selection, tree planting and selection of species.
There are many local species that can be used in urban parks, street and road landscaping and even highway tree corridors. The choice of kayu jati (Tectonia grandis) along our highways was good, but these trees take a long time to look gorgeous, maybe about 40 years or more. And so it’s best not to harvest them so soon. A good example is the small kayu jati garden in Langkawi, already over 40 years old. They are also strong and firm, they look stunning, and are unlikely to fall off like the fast growers of legume species and pokok sena which tend to be the favourite with many local authorities.
I would like to suggest that when the local authorities are giving approvals for landscaping in new housing areas, new roads, new parks etc, the selection of tree species, planting distance and general landscaping should be given much thought and real expert guidance.
Previously the contractors were left to themselves to choose the trees, and they chose the cheapest (e.g. Acacia, legumes, pokok sena) and these were never taken care off properly. We find many trees which were not well maintained or regularly pruned, giving horrible looks after ten twenty years. So, after 50 years of independence, we should have better and well mixed trees grown in our built environment so that 50 years from now our grand children will know that we are not ecologically illiterate.
Salam Tun,
Good to hear that you are well. I guess human simply has a nack in tempering and changing what nature has intended. We have created for ourselves, a concrete jungle to live in, a complex and efficient economy to support huge population, uniform education for our children. As such a human life has become much like a robot, enslave to an efficient system that rob us of our freedom. Adding to burden of life is a concious political reingineering of society that tramble on those unfortunate soul that do not fit the description of the plan. Human just like tree is suppose to be able to grow without hindrance to a height as nature intended it to be. You may call it delima that required such adjustment. Logically I too agree with you. But still it is sad for many poor soul that is made to feel stateless. Bahasa jiwa bangsa. For many chinese born and grew up in Malaysia, who can't even read and write chinese is like orang tiada jiwa, perhaps that is the reason why most sent their kids to venacular school. Balancing two sides of a coin is not so that easy.
Salam Tun.
Hmm...maybe the government should encourage and create more dusun buah-buahan instead. So everybody can share (and taste) the benefits. Btw how are you doing Tun? Hope you are getting better.
Trees are valuable, especially forest trees.
Then some people abused their authority to cut the forest down to make road, but after the forest gone, road never appeared. And the dam never generate electricity, either.
buat duit mau cepat, kerja malas.
We've got this kind 'Malay' mentality inside the YBs' head, and that's why we (pembangkang) are challenging them. To take them out of their comfort zone.
'You did wrong things to the roots under the ground, people can see at the tip of the leaf. '
